Hannah Dakota Fanning, better known simply as Dakota Fanning, is an American actress. Fanning’s breakthrough performance was in I Am Sam in 2001. As a child actress, she appeared in high-profile films such as Man on Fire, War of the Worlds, and Charlotte’s Web. Fanning began transitioning to more adult roles with Hounddog and The Secret Life of Bees. Recent films have included The Twilight Saga and The Runaways. She has won numerous awards and is the youngest person to have been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Dakota Fanning was born in Conyers, Georgia, the daughter of Joy (née Arrington), who played tennis professionally, and Steve Fanning, who played minor league baseball and now works as an electronics salesman in Los Angeles. Her maternal grandfather was former American football player, Rick Arrington, and her aunt is former ESPN reporter Jill Arrington. Dakota is the older sister of Elle Fanning, also an actress.

Fanning began acting at the age of five after appearing on a Tide commercial. Her first significant acting jobthe NBC prime-time drama ER, which remains one of her favorite roles (“I played a car accident victim who has leukemia. I got to wear a neck brace and nose tubes for the two days I worked.”) was a guest-starring role in

Fanning subsequently had several guest roles on established television series, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Practice, and Spin City. She also portrayed the title characters of Ally McBeal and The Ellen Show as young girls. In 2001, Fanning was chosen to star opposite Sean Penn in the movie I Am Sam, the story of a mentally challenged man who fights for the custody of his daughter (played by Fanning).

Dakota Fanning’s role in the film made Fanning the youngest person ever to be nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, being seven years of age at the time. She also won the Best Young Actor/Actress award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association for her performance.

Dakota Fanning is rapidly making the transition to more mature material as an actress, but not long ago, the 16-year-old was still a sheltered kid. She revealed in an MTV News interview that she saw her first concert less than two years ago, when she was 14. And it wasn't exactly the rebellious punk music that Fanning belts out in The Runaways (opening in limited release today).

"I was doing a movie with Alicia Keys so I went to her concert," says Fanning, who was a castmate of Keys' in the 2008 film The Secret Life of Bees.

MTV News asked Keys to corroborate. "Yes, that's true!" said the Grammy winner. "She came to my L.A. show for my last tour." At the time, Keys was touring to promote her triple-platinum album As I Am.

Keys, 29, said she was honored to introduce Fanning to the live music experience. "She's an amazing person," the singer-songwriter gushed. "She's someone who we're absolutely going to watch flourish for many years. And I'm glad she will always say her first concert was me!"

So far, Fanning has traded a typical teen social life for a prolific and varied film career (although she was a cheerleader for her school in her down time). But she lives vicariously through her characters, and now that we know her first concert was a performance by Alicia Keys, we have to say -- that is a fine choice




 




Looking fresh-faced and fancyfree, Dakota Fanning was spotted leaving a yoga class in Los Angeles this afternoon (February 16).
Wearing a grey zip up sweatshirt, blue Nike stretch pants and carrying a bottle of Mountain Valley Spring Water, the 15-year-old starlet offered photogs a chic pose before getting picked up by her mom.
Dakota is currently busy getting herself in red carpet condition ahead of the March premiere of her new movie The Runaways.
She stars alongside Kristen Stewart as band member Cherie Currie, whose novel Neon Angel is the basis for the movie. Also co-starring is model Riley Keough, daughter of Lisa Marie Presley.
